I wanted to do a proper diffuse-only, handpainted model for a while now but try something different from the 'classic' workflow. I started with a very basic sketch, created a mockup in Maya, then did a highpoly in Zbrush and used that to get a decent starting point in painter (AO, curvature, stuff like that). I often use sketching to get a very general idea and finalize the design in the Maya mockup.I used the 'baked lighting' filter in Painter to get a starting point for the way the light falls on the model. Then I did a bunch of handpainting on top of that, really only using the what I did previously as a general guide and focussing on getting that painterly handpainted feeling. It wasn't my goal to create a super refined handpainted model, but rather create a interesting design, composition and feel.
