Asset Overview

The barn, called *Kreuzstadl* because of its cross-shaped ground plan, is located at the southern end of Rechnitz in Burgenland. At the eastern and western ends, there was originally a gateway that made it possible to drive harvest wagons into the building and, after unloading, to drive out again in the direction of travel. On the east side, the brick archway of the former entrance is still preserved. At the south and north ends there were smaller entrance doors which are now bricked up. The building also has small windows with woodwork and iron grilles. The former agricultural building was the scene of the Rechnitz massacre, in which about 180 Hungarian Jews were murdered in the night of 24-25 March 1945. The shooting was carried out by the local Gestapo leader Franz Podezin and other helpers. The bodies have not been found to this day. In 1993, the building was purchased through donations and handed over to the Jewish Community of Vienna in a ceremony. Today it serves as a memorial.
