The liturgical sandals could only be worn during the celebration of the Mass. They were reserved for the bishops. Exceptionally, the pope could also grant this prerogative to an abbot. Thus the Abbe Wibald of Stavelot and his successor Erlebad received this privilege in the course of the twelfth century.
