Asset Overview

In the NE quadrant of a graveyard (MA040-031002-), lying on the ground surface. A prostrate, pillar-like block of granitic stone (L 1.35m N-S; Wth 0.3m E−W, T 0.15-0.2m), with a roughly rectangular cross-section, bearing an ogham inscription along one angle of its long axis. The stone lies on the ground surface with its long axis oriented N−S; the inscription can be seen on the upper angle on the W side of the stone. It extends from the N end of the stone to roughly mid-way along its length. The surface of the stone is moderately blotched with lichens and moss, with denser growth on the W face. (Jane O’Shaughnessy, field report) The ogham inscription has been interpreted as DOTAGNI or possibly COTAGNI, as the spall at the start of the inscription may have removed a couple of scores.
