Asset Overview

Medieval sculptural relief dated in 1382 depicting the scene of the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin. The sculpture was part of the funeral chapel of Rui Pires Alfageme in the convent of San Francisco (Simões, 1868: 361-362). In the lower part of the set the inscription is conserved (Barata, 1903: 28): (A) AQ(u)I : IAZ : RUI : PIReZ : ALFAGEME : FRADE : DA : TerCEIRA : ORDEN : E(ra) : IIIc XX (Here lies Rui Pires Alfageme, friar of the Third Order. It was 420). The Angel carries a phylacterium with the inscription AVE: MARIA: GR (atia ...). In the center of the scene is an open book with the following inscription: "ECCE ANCILLA DOMINI FIAT MIHI..." (Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word).
