Asset Overview
This furnace door was found during CAP excavations of Saints' Rest, the first dormitory built on the campus of Michigan State University in 1856. The door is made of iron and has a very well-preserved coat of arms and fleur-de-lis embellishments on the outside surface. Above the design, the phrase 'DESIGN PATENTED' appears while below the design at the base of the door, the date "JUNE 22, 1858" is given, likely noting the patent date.
Other furnace doors and furnace components were recovered during excavation. Since Saints' Rest burned down in 1870, and its foundation was filled in from its own rubble and debris, this allowed CAP to make these excellent finds.
