Asset Overview
Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines - a mortarium rim. This mortarium rim, stamped with the makers name, is typical of the domestic finds in Staines. It was found at the Mumford and Lobb site, south of the high street near the railway line, so on the outskirts of the Roman town. A number of these large mortaria were found in Staines and would have a diameter of about 30cm. It would also have a bowl with grit included in the surface to aid the breaking up of ingredients. If anybody can decode the makers stamp, please leave a comment.
This rim is now part of the education team's handling box.
