**Nancy Hilliard Cemetery Monument** Location: Old Chapel Hill Cemetery, Orange County, North Carolina. Period: Nineteenth century. Material: marble with sandstone (?) backing. Dimensions: not measured. Notes: Cemetery monument of Nancy Segur Hilliard, located in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ms. Hilliard was the well-known and much-loved proprietress of the Eagle Hotel, located adjacent to the campus on Franklin Street. Under her management, the Eagle provided room and board to both students and out-of-town guests during the decades leading up to the Civil War. The inscription on the monument reads "NANCY S. HILLIARD. Born in Granville County, October 17, 1798. Died in Chapel Hill, November 8, 1873. ERECTED 1886, By certain alumni of this University, in grateful remembrance of her unfailing kindness and hospitality." Model by Steve Davis.
