No. 123 - Large topographic map block

This very large wooden block (32cm x 14cm) features a sequence of brilliant white alder boards inter-layered with thin veneer of cherry and quarter sawn English brown oak. The layers of veneer create the illusion of a topographic contour map on the carved surfaces. The surface of this block is carved to reflect three major types of topographic landscapes. On the left side of the block are U-shaped, glacially carved valleys with hanging valleys, terminal & medial moraines, and even a horn. The center of the block features a dendritic pattern of V-shaped, river carved valleys. The right side of the block is carved to reflect an arid landscape with mesas and buttes. The block is cut by four, 1/8 inch thick layers that range in attitude from vertical to shallowly dipping. Students can use these planes to practice using intersections with contours to calculate strikes and dips. Wood model by Kurtis C.
