[Paço dos Condes de Barcelos](https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pa%C3%A7o_dos_Condes_de_Barcelos) is in the old town of Barcelos. During the succesion war in Portugal (1383–1385) the city of Barcelos and Guimaraes took the side of the spanish crown. After the victory of the Aviz dynstaty, both cities were gifted to the portugese general Nuno Álvares Pereira along the title of a count. The palace was constructed as the residence for the counts of Bareclos. Nuno Álvares Pereira daughter married Afonso the son of John I, the king of portugal, which later recieved the title of first Duke of Braganza. With the rise of house of Braganza to power, the city became an important medival city. A similar palace was constructed in the city of Guimaraes. Although both castles were damaged during the earthquake, the one in Guimaraes was restored in 19th century whereas this one was deconstructed by the city council, which was stopped half way due to the protests of the locals.
