Asset Overview
In times gone by, one of the main functions of the Ballarat Town Hall was to hold social events for the local community, including dances. In 1942 and 1943, around 15,000 US marines and servicemen were brought to Ballarat to rest and recouperate during WWII. Here they were accommodated with either local families or in a tent camp at Victoria Park. They initiated an Old Time Dance at the Town Hall, which endured for at least twenty years during the 1940s and '50s. Boxes of this Palais floor wax were used to rejuvenate the 'A-Hall' dancefloor ready for the next event.
