Asset Overview

Percival Maw, born 1891, lived at Blakey Junction and was employed as a plate layer on the Rosedale Railway. He was drafted as a Private to the 5th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment in 1916 but no service records exist as to where he went next but it is known that he died in Carlisle on 27th April 1919, aged just 28. Perhaps a patient at Fusehill Military Hospital before he died. Was it Percy that carved his initials and the date 1914 in this rock alongside the Rosedale Railway as the First World War began, perhaps leaving his mark in case he was called up and didn't come back? We will probably never know for sure. The untextured model below shows the letters more clearly. ![](https://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/__data/assets/image/0021/357600/Letters.jpg) ![](https://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/__data/assets/image/0024/357603/PM.jpg)
