This is an unusual find from the wreck as there are no records for members of the 56th West Essex Regiment of Foot on board the Abergavenny. The first battalion was stationed on the Isle of Wight awaiting embarkation (due to begin in March 1805) while the recently formed second battalion was at Farnham.
One possibility is that a soldier transferred from the 56th regiment prior to the voyage, or, that the button was traded by a member of the 56th with a soldier of another regiment.
The museum would be grateful for any more information on this unusaul find.
