Asset Overview

The presented item is a pyx (Latin: ciborium, pyxis), i.e. a container used to carry the consecrated host. It usually takes the form of a chalice with a lid, as in this case. The pyx in the collection of the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec was founded in 1691 by Benedictine Rupert Mierkowski. The vessel was probably not originally intended for the monastery church in Tyniec. The founder of the pyx, being a Tyniec parson at the same time, gifted it to the parish temple in Tyniec. After its demolition in 1825, the item was transferred to the monastery. It is one of the few historical works of gold that remained in Tyniec after the dissolution of the monastery. 1691, Kraków Museum of the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec Inventory number: NL/01/2019
