Asset Overview

A relief sculpture of the goddess Aphrodite of Aphrodisias, dedicated by Theodoros, recovered from the theatre. It dates to approximately the 2nd-3rd century C.E. It is on display at the Aphrodisias Museum, Turkey. The goddess Aphrodite of Aphrodisias, for whom the city was named, started in the Archaic Period, or possibly earlier as a local Carian goddess. By the Hellenistic Era she was conflated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite and was given a new canonical image.
