Asset Overview

Everyday life in Pontes, Roman Staines – a heavily restored globular storage jar. ‘Heavily restored’ is probably something of understatement. If you look at the model you will see that the pot sherds form a complete rim, but after that we cannot be certain what is original and what is restoration. That is because the restorer has spray painted his/her work grey and added some zig-zag decoration for good measure. Ouch. Before we become too critical, we must remember that in the late 1970s the digital revolution was yet to happen. There was no sketchfab to visualise the ancient past, no internet and computers were to be found only in the basements of university and government research laboratories. Perhaps we should view this object as the efforts of somebody living in the past to visualise the ancient past. Our jat stands 195mm high, 186mm maximum diameter and 65mm diameter foot.
