Asset Overview

Retable of passion, Brabant, Brussels, around 1490-1500, Brussels punches. Oak, original polychromy, partially reworked gilding, the shutters are gone. Musée du Cinquantenaire (Brussels, Belgium). Made with ReMake and ReCap Pro from Autodesk. Various techniques are visible in the original polychromy, such as the brocade decor (among others for the clothes of Mary Magdalene in the scene of the Cruxifixion), the red lacquered paint that enhances the shine of the gold of the clothes of some characters and very fine hand-painted patterns. In addition, the edges of the garments were even hemmed with small dots and tiny metallic fleurons were affixed on the cross of the Crucifixion. This small "domestic altarpiece" was probably intended to adorn the altar erected in a convent or in a particular rich person.
