Asset Overview
Roman funeral monument of gray marble dated between the year 151 A.D. and 210 A.D. It belonged to Mercator. In the inscription that still retains on one of its faces we can read: D(is). M(anibus). S(acrum). MERCATOR ANN(orum) XXXII (triginta duorum) VXOR. MARITO MERENTI. POSVIT H(ic). S(itus). E(st). S(it).T(ibi). T(erra). L(evis). The translation according to Encarnação, (1984) would say: “Consecrated to the Manes gods. Here lies Mercator, thirty-two years old. The wife of the deserved husband put. May the earth be light to you”. Mercator could be a slave. The funerary monument is of the Cupa type. It is currently preserved in the Frei Manuel do Cenáculo National Museum (Évora, Portugal).
