Asset Overview

Roman marble funerary monument dated in the 3rd century A.D. It belonged to Lucius Julius Polybius as the inscription of four lines that still retains on one of its faces and in which we can read: D(is). M(anibus). S(acrum) L(ucius). I(ulius). POLIBIVS ANN(orum). LXXII (septuaginta duorum) H(ic). S(itus). E(st). S(it). T(ibi). T(erra). L(evis). The translation according to Encarnação, (1984) would say: “Consecrated to the Manes gods. Here lies Lucius Julius Polybius, seventy-two years old. May the earth be light to you”. The funerary monument is of the Cupa type, named for its characteristic cylindrical shape that mimics a lying tank (Cupa means barrel in Latin). It is currently preserved in the Frei Manuel do Cenáculo National Museum (Évora, Portugal). Catalog No. ME1723.
