Asset Overview

Photogrammetric reconstruction from the Art Institute of Chicago "This sculpture replicates the most famous Greek sculpture of a goddess, the Aphrodite of Knidos. Carved by the sculpture Praxiteles in the fourth Century B.C. from fine marble, the original sculpture, which is no longer extant, enjoyed great reknown as the first devotional statue of a female goddess in the nude. After causing an immediate sensation when it was installed in a sacred precint on the island of Knidos, it inspired many re-creations over the succeding centuries. This particular copy was placed outdoors; the badly marred surface is the result of prolonged exposure to the elements" 1981.11(?)
