The "Sühnekreuz" is the name given to stones that criminals used to put up for their misdeeds. The murderer had to set an atonement cross, for which he was either allowed to choose the location himself or was given one by the court. This was mostly a public place or the crime scene. This can be proven on the basis of historical records.
