Sculpted pillar in Cadouin Abbey

This is one of the numerous sculptures in the cloister of Cadouin abbey (late 15th century, this cloister is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list). All the sculptures were carved for the monk's education : This one depicts the rich man and the poor Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) : "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores". The whole story is concentrated into one small descriptive sculpture, which contains every detail with great accuracy : wonderful story on stone !
