Asset Overview
**The Serpent Column**, also known as the Serpentine Column or the Plataean Tripod, is an ancient Greek monument located in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul. It is made of bronze and depicts three intertwined snakes, and is believed to be one of the oldest large-scale monuments in Istanbul. The bronze column, which has 29 coils and was erected to commemorate the victory of the Greek cities over the Persian army in 479 BC, was originally erected in the temple of Apollo at Delphi. It is believed to have been brought to Istanbul by Emperor Constantine in 324 AD and was believed to have magical powers that protected the city from insects and reptiles. Only a 5-meter section of the column has survived to the present day; the top and bottom sections are broken.
