Sheep were part of the livestock kept on board to feed high ranking crew and passengers.
Unlike pork and beef, mutton was unsuitable for preservation by salting.
Identified as Romney Marsh, or Old Kent breed, this type was chosen on the strength of its suitability/resistance to wet environments over the quality of its meat.
