Asset Overview

Melbourne’s 1956 summer Olympics saw a number of events held at Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, and was an important moment in the town’s history. This is one of a pair of shoes worn by Ballarat-born high jumper John Vernon while competing in the 1956 Olympics, and forms part of a small collection of material donated to the City of Ballarat by John and fellow Olympian Robert ‘Bob’ Bath. Other items include a Visitors Book signed by 1956 canoeing and rowing teams from competing countries, as well as one of four Olympic flags used in Ballarat during the 1956 Games.
