Asset Overview

The statue, discovered in a land owned by Antonelli near the Roman amphitheater, was donated by the Antonelli family in 1839 to Pope Gregory XVI and today constitutes a famous ornament of the Lateran Museum. It was restored by Tenerani. It is believed with great verisimilitude that it is the marble copy of the original in bronze that, between 350 and 330 a. C., was erected to Sophocles in the theater of Dionysus in Athens, at the suggestion of Lycurgus. This 3D image is based on the plaster copy you see as you enter the town hall of Terracina.
