Neolithic cup and ring marked stone
NT 45167 58000
The stone was found by the fence line of a grass pasture field, adjacent to the B6368 road on Soutra Hill, Borders, Scotland. The stone is a round boulder 30 cm x 30 cm by 20 cm. The stone weighs 14.85kg. There is one cup mark in the centre of the stone surrounded by two concentric circles. The cup and the rings are joined by a groove. Tool marks can be seen. The markings are only on the top face of the stone.
The stone was loosely embedded in turf where it must have had been cleared from the field, probably within the last 20 years.
There was a previous cup and ring marked stone found in the same field in 2005 (Canmore ID 276641 at NT45300 58000). That stone was claimed as Treasure Trove by National Museum of Scotland (CO.TT.157/15).
Dere Street Roman Road runs through the field approximately 100 mtrs from the find site.
A Bronze Spearhead (Canmore ID 54537) was found at NT 45001 58002 150 mtrs north of the find site.
