A sturdy metal tray from a local whinstone mine, used for carrying spoil and shale. Shale from these mines was fine and flaky so it would be easier, rather than shovelling, to load it in a tray like this and tip it behind a wall of 'deads' - stones that were not economically worth taking out of the mine but were used to line passageways as a waste material. The photo below shows two of these trays in use at Grosmont Ironworks spoil heaps.
