St Helen's Church, Hogback 02

  AOC recorded this hogback stone on behalf of Historic Environment Scotland as part of work at the site of St Helen's Church, Cockburnspath, in spring 2021, following a report of possible damage to another hogback stone at the site. This example is very weathered and worn, and represents only a fragment from one end of the original stone. An animal is discernible on one side. Lang describes a "quadruped with a foreleg raised and the tail over the back". The other side bears tegulae, a pattern representing tiles or scales. The stone probably dates to the 11th century AD.
