Asset Overview

A fragment of a steatite (soapstone) bowl recovered during an archaeological investigation of several precontact period soapstone quarries located near Randallstown, Baltimore County, Maryland. Steatite bowls pre-date any ceramic manufacturing in Maryland and many of the first ceramic vessels that followed have crushed steatite mixed as temper with the clay to help strengthen the ceramic vessels. Bowls such as this one date from the Late Archaic into the Early Woodland (between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago). Courtesy of the Natural History Society of Maryland which has given permission for the model to be downloadable for non-commercial educational purposes.
