I ran across these statues in a small, very remote village in the deep jungle of North Sumatra. The locals said that they were found in a nearby cave or rock shelter, and that after some thefts they were moved from the cave into the village square. Indonesia has a remarkable archaeological record that includes many megalithic sites (mostly unstudied, I believe), and these statues appear similar to some megalithic carved stone works I have seen elsewhere. The village where these statues are is half Christian and half Muslim, but has this array of 'idols' standing in the village center - an interesting juxtaposition! Credit to Dr. Mudrik R. Daryono (LIPI) for joining me on this trip and taking the pictures that I used to make the model.
