Asset Overview

Sutton Hoo ship burial and Royal Cemetary site with annotations of mounds 1–4, excavated by Basil Brown. The 2021 Netflix movie "The Dig" is based on the real life events surrounding one of the greatest archaeological finds in the world, and one of the most notable pre-Viking Saxon era from the 6th to 7th centuries. Starting in 1938, archaeolgists have continued working here and the surrounding areas until the modern age, with a number of new discoveries in the early 2000s. Treasures include armor, chain mail, helmets, gold, silver, garnet inlay, and much more. Many of these artifacts can be see in the British Museum in London, England. The fantastic tale of this discovery can be seen on the new Netflix film staring Carey Mulligan, Raplh Fiennes, Lily James, and Archie Barnes. Information relating the film to real life, and original pictures of the dig can be found on the UK National Trust website at https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sutton-hoo/features/digging-the-dirt-the-true-story-behind-the-dig
