Swinton Kirk has enjoyed a close association with the Swinton family, who were the local landowners. Heraldic panels displaying the Swinton coat-of-arms, which features three boars' heads, have been built into the fabric of the walls. This panel on the north wall of the kirk has a chained boar and three boars heads and the letters SAS and DMH. Swinton comes from the name Swine Town as there were many boar in the area historically.
