Asset Overview
The grave is marked by a single headstone facing west. The stone is typical of its period. It is a flat slab which has a segmental head within which there is a floral design leaving the main rectangle of the stone for the inscription surrounded by a border. Annotations by David Dawson.
This monument was scanned prior to restoration work as part of the Georgians in Stone project. The PCC of St John the Baptist were awarded a grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to conserve 12 Georgian monuments including the African's Grave. This project ran in 2019 and 2020 project managed by the conservation charity Caring for God's Acre. The Georgian Society also grant aided the restoration of this monument.
