The Crucifixion with St Jerome
Marble, carved in high relief
St Jerome (c 3402420 is usually portrayed as a
hermit adoring a Crucifix in the Syrian desert, or.
because of his production of a Latin text of the Bible,
as a scholar in his study. The iconography of this relief
is unusual in showing him as a witness to Christ's
suffering on the Cross. A lion became his companion
after he had removed a thorn from its paw, much
later in his life, while he was a monk at Bethlehem.
