Valiantly wielding his flaming sword, Saint Michael
casts a group of rebel angels, portrayed as demons,
out of heaven. The demon directly under Michael's
feet has two faces, representing deceit. This group
was carved with great mastery from Solnhofen
limestone, found in the southern German state of
Bavaria, where devotion to Saint Michael was par-
ticularly prevalent in the Baroque period.
