Asset Overview

Like the moon, the wise god Toth has two faces: a baboon's round head at full moon, and an ibis head when the moon is waxing. Here the baboon is sitting on a column with an ibis relief. Of Toth himself, in his human form, only a hand on the moon disk remains; the rest of the god's statue is missing. In Roman Egypt Toth was identified with the god Mercury. Marble, Egypt (?), ca. AD 100 -150. Inventory number: 7946
