Asset Overview

The small statue of turquoise faience (inventory no. 13) is approx. 4.5 cm high and dates to the Late Period (approx. 664–332 B.C.). It shows the god Thoth as baboon in a squatting positon holding a Wedjat-eye—a symbol of protection—in its hands above its knees. A hook is situated at the back suggesting the object was worn as an amulet. Thoth is associated with different aspects of Egyptian culture as a god of nature, cosmology, writing, science and medicine. Thoth’s sacred animals are the ibis and the baboon.
