Asset Overview

Underneath the repaired capstone of Tregiffian burial chamber in West Penwith, Cornwall, UK, is a large cup mark. It is possible that this was at one point an attempt to drill a hole through the stone, as it matches a cup mark of similar size directly above. It is about 25cm in diameter. This cup mark is bisected by a repaired split in the stone, and again by a steel supporting girder inserted after the Tregiffian excavation (and reconstruction) in 1968. Note that this cup mark was scanned in a very confined space, on the 'ceiling' of the tomb. The spider on the model shows something of the conditions at the time of scanning! A hanging spider nest was left undisturbed and had to be removed from the model.
