"Turk's Head" Pipe Bowl Fragment

This clay tobacco pipe bowl fragment was recovered from an archaeological excavation at Brook Farm conducted in the early 1990s. It is likely part of a human effigy pipe referred to as a "Turk's Head," a style which peaked in popularity between 1820 an 1880. This particular example was recovered from an area of the Brook Farm property which was the site of a dairy farm from approximately 1700-1840. From 1840-1847, the property was occupied by the Brook Farm Association for Education and Agriculture, a utopian community founded by Transcendentalists. This area was the location of a communal building called the Hive. Documentary and archaeological evidence indicates that the original structure burned after the failure of Brook Farm but was rebuilt in the 1850s. It was also the location of Camp Andrew, a Civil War training camp in 1861, and a Lutheran orphanage from 1871-1948. Artifact lot # 94739. Scanned by Nadia Kline.
