Death Valley is below sea level in a place that once had an 800 foot deep fresh water lake surrounded by pines and full of trout. Ten feet of water would evaporate from the lake each year if it got that much water. Instead, there is a slush of borax and water, and the borax was shipped to market in this wagon drawn by a team of twenty mules. The water tank was for the mules. Borax is a wood preservative, so here it is, as scanned in 2016.
