Asset Overview

Voltzite (BIRUG 996) is a variety of Wurtzite: a zinc iron sulphide mineral (Zn,Fe)S. It was named in 1833 by Joseph Jean Baptiste Xavier Fournet after the French palaeontologist, metallurgist and mining engineer Philippe-Louis Voltz. This particular specimen displays a botryoidal crystal form (literally ‘grape-like’) and was collected from Cornwall, England. It now forms part of the Museum’s McLean Collection, donated by W. McLean in 1915. Scanning was performed using an Artec Spider 3D scanner by Courtney Szanto.
