Asset Overview

Text from the exhibit: "WHEN COTTON WAS KING In 1860, the South grew an astonishing 2.28 billion pounds of cotton. Cotton exports that same year generated $191,800,000. This figure represented 57% of the nation's total export revenue. Southern cotton planters felt economically powerful and politically confident that the national government in Washington could not afford to alienate them by destabilizing the institution of slavery."
