Asset Overview

White Castle hillfort in East Lothian. Terrain model derived from aerial LiDAR data. White Castle is a great example of an Iron Age hillfort, a defended settlement probably first established around 400 BC and repeatedly reoccupied and rebuilt in a sequence that extened to at least 200 BC. White Castle is multivallate, meaning there are multiple defensive outworks, and contains surface traces of at least 18 internal buildings. Excavations at the site have also found evidence for Neolithic and Bronze Age activity at the site.
