Asset Overview

This tombstone is located in the Masonic section of Evergreen Cemetery, Santa Cruz. The relief at the top is beautifully carved and depicts Father Time and a maiden. Father Time has an hourglass at his feet and a scythe leaning against his left shoulder, with its blade resting on the ground. He is untangling the young woman's hair. The young woman leans against a broken column and holds a small vessel in her left hand and a sprig of evergreen in her right hand. A book rests on top of the bottom half of the broken column. For more on the symbolism of this scene and variations on the imagery, see: https://wordsonstone.wordpress.com/2014/08/19/father-time-the-weeping-virgin/ As to who William Foster was, I have been unable to find any information regarding his life or death. Based on his grave's location in the Masonic section of the cemetery and the subject of the relief carving, it may be assumed that he was a Mason.
