Asset Overview

Low Poly Laser Scanned Model - Annotated The Bealin High Cross is a 8th century high cross located in the Twyford demesne estate. It is not in it’s origional locatio and possibly came from Clonmacnoise (identifed as Cross R on Blaymires 17th C. View of Clonmacnoise. It formally stood beside a holy well in the Twyford eastate, and there is no definitive evidence it was at Clonmacnoise during it’s life. An inscription on the W. face ‘Oroit Ar Tuathgail Las Dernath In Chrossa’ [a prayer for tuathgail who had this cross made] may refer to an abbot of Clonmacnoise, and the origin of the suggestion it originated there. This cross was surveyed as an action of the Westmeath Heritage Plan and funded by Westmeath Co. Council January 2018.
