Asset Overview

An incomplete Roman Colchester derivative brooch of Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4.g, flat wing ends type), dating to AD 160-200. Around 75% of the brooch is present, with the spring and pin missing. The wings are semi-cylindrical in plan with pierced wing/end caps intact. The end caps extend slightly beyond the diameter of the wings. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular (comma shaped) in profile. At the reverse of the head is a groove which would have retained the spring. A rearward facing hook is incomplete at the top of the bow, this would have held part of the spring. The bow is broadly D shaped in cross section. It extends to a turned cylindrical bulbous knop / foot with a collar. At the reverse of the brooch there is a moulded rib that extends from the underside of the head and broadens to form the catchplate. The catch plate is incomplete.
