An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman decorated trumpet brooch, dating to circa AD 75 to 400.
The brooch is almost complete apart from the missing pin and spring mechanism. The brooch is an inverted 'L' shape in profile and the bow tapers from an oval head to a circular foot knop.
Trumpet style brooches typically date from 75 to 175 AD. There are many similar examples on the database (WMID-E1F7C6) has similar decoration and was in fact discovered by the same finder in a different area of Shropshire. Another example decorated with enamel (SWYOR-9D86F8) was discovered in Nottinghamshire. Mackreth (2011) illustrates an identical example no. 4984, plate 81. This is grouped into a category with similar moulded knops. The example comes from Alcester in Warwickshire and is dated to after AD 357.
