An incomplete copper alloy Late Early Medieval Anglo-Scandinavian zoomorphic stirrup terminal of 11th Century dating.
The face is decorated with a moulded zoomorphic beast's head, this has expanded flaring nostrils at the base above which a high transvers ridge forms a brow that mounts two lentoid shaped bulging eyes. Finally above the brow ridge are two small semi-circular protrusions forming the ears. Just below the top there is a prominent ridge which does not extend to the rear. The reverse has a hollow concave back that forms the socket for the sidearm of the stirrup, with a transverse stop ridge at the base. Iron corrosion products are present in the concave back, indicating that part of the stirrup is still present.
