The Swedish gun yawl is similar to the larger gun sloop only smaller. These extremely light vessels had only one big cannon in the back. The boat had an extended hull in the stern to offset recoil during cannon operation. The gun yawl presents the most advanced and cost-effective vessel for archipelago warfare in the late 18th century. Designed by the F. H. Chapman to be easily and cheaply built all across the Swedish kingdom and to be maneuverable in the Finnish coast. The great number of these small boats also decided the Second Battle of Svensksund.
